The Delta Piano Trio has a special connection with composer Lera Auerbach. During their search for contemporary repertoire, the ensemble became fascinated with her piano trios, which they often performed. After writing to her about them, they had the opportunity to work with Auerbach on this music. This collaboration gave the musicians a unique glimpse into the world of her piano trios.

The title of this CD is taken from Auerbach's Second Piano Trio, Triptych - The Mirror with Three Faces (2012). This work, which is the heart of the recording, was inspired by the construction of a triptych mirror. Auerbach describes it as a kind of theater piece in which three individuals have their own story, but at the same time are part of one whole. At the same time, the mirror remains ambiguous: are we seeing three facets of one person, or three separate images?

Auerbach's Piano Trio No. 1 is among her earliest works. It contains fascinating references to the 19th- and 20th-century tradition, enriched with very own effects that give her music a unique palette of colors. Shostakovich's influence is clearly audible here. Accordingly, the CD opens with his Piano Trio No. 2: a work that begins with a paradoxical combination of strict counterpoint and ethereal harmonics, followed by a powerful, rustic and ironic second movement. It is followed by a melancholy passacaglia, and ends with a moving Dance of Death.
